- U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs recorded $635.49 million in net outflows on Thursday, the largest daily outflow since June 25.
- BlackRock’s IBIT and Fidelity’s FBTC accounted for roughly 74% of the day’s withdrawals, and ether ETFs also reversed into heavy selling.
- Bitcoin ETFs remain positive for the week, but the rapid swing from inflows to outflows points to fragile institutional conviction.
Institutional demand for crypto exchange-traded products reversed sharply on Thursday. A day after bitcoin ETF buying spread across eight funds, investors withdrew $635.49 million from the category, erasing most of the prior three sessions’ gains. The move also pulled ether products back into outflows and weighed on total net assets.
What Happened
The outflow was the largest single-day figure for bitcoin ETFs since June 25. It wiped out almost 60% of the $1.08 billion that had flowed into the funds over the previous three trading sessions.
BlackRock’s IBIT led the withdrawals with $254.05 million leaving the fund, while Fidelity’s FBTC lost $217.46 million. Together, those two products made up about 74% of Thursday’s total outflows. Ark and 21Shares’ ARKB shed $109.43 million, Grayscale’s GBTC lost $29.53 million, and Bitwise’s BITB recorded a $27.35 million exit. Morgan Stanley’s MSBT was the only bitcoin fund to take in new money, adding $2.33 million.
Trading volume across the bitcoin funds reached $2.56 billion. Combined net assets fell by nearly $5 billion, to $104.71 billion.
Why It Matters
The most telling detail is the speed of the reversal. IBIT and FBTC attracted a combined $447.70 million on Wednesday, then lost $471.51 million the following day. Across the two sessions, their net flow was slightly negative, despite a strong buying day in the middle.
That pattern suggests that large allocators are willing to deploy capital quickly, but that their positioning is highly sensitive to price action and broader risk sentiment. Bitcoin fell below $81,000 on Thursday after approaching $85,000 on Wednesday. Flows appear to have followed that price move closely, which indicates that short-term sentiment is still driving a meaningful share of ETF activity.
For investors tracking the market, the data shows that a single strong session does not necessarily signal a durable trend. Even so, the weekly picture has not turned negative. Bitcoin ETFs remain up $442.67 million for the week after Thursday’s drawdown. Month-to-date flows, however, have slipped back into a deficit of $174.50 million.
Market Context
Ether products followed a similar pattern. A $14.96 million inflow on Wednesday gave way to a $110.50 million outflow on Thursday. BlackRock’s ETHA lost $75.45 million and ETHB shed $17.17 million. Grayscale’s Ether Mini Trust and ETHE posted outflows of $10.69 million and $9.56 million, respectively, while Fidelity’s FETH took in $2.37 million. Ether ETF trading activity totaled $550.23 million, and net assets dropped to $14.57 billion.
The ether figures reinforce a broader observation about the asset’s institutional demand this month. Positive sessions have appeared repeatedly, but they have not yet developed into sustained accumulation.
Other products showed mixed results. Grayscale’s Zcash ETF, ZCSH, attracted $14.23 million on Thursday, extending a second consecutive day of inflows and bringing its two-day total to roughly $29.4 million. Its net assets closed at $681.39 million. Franklin’s XRPZ added $3.55 million, and Bitwise’s NRR, linked to NEAR, took in $513,060.
Solana products offered less encouragement. After ending a 12-session outflow streak on Wednesday, the category lost $8.51 million on Thursday. Bitwise’s BSOL accounted for $5.72 million of that, and Grayscale’s GSOL lost $3.22 million. HYPE-linked ETFs also recorded withdrawals totaling $7.88 million.
What to Watch Next
- Daily bitcoin ETF flows: Whether IBIT and FBTC return to net inflows will be a key signal of whether Thursday’s outflow was a short-term reaction or the start of a broader trend.
- Bitcoin price levels: Movement around the $81,000 area and the recent near-$85,000 high may help explain whether ETF investors are reacting to price momentum.
- Month-to-date totals: Bitcoin ETFs are currently in a $174.50 million deficit for the month, so readers should watch whether the weekly lead can hold.
- Ether ETF consistency: Ether products need sustained inflows rather than single-day gains to show a meaningful change in institutional positioning.
- Smaller product flows: Continued inflows into Zcash and other altcoin products, alongside outflows from Solana, will help show where investor interest is concentrating.
The overall message from the latest data is one of selectivity and volatility. Bitcoin retains a positive weekly cushion, but Thursday demonstrated how quickly that support can erode when the largest funds move in the same direction.
