Bitcoin Tops Stocks and Bonds in JPMorgan’s 10-Year Forecast

  • J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s 2027 Long-Term Capital Markets Assumptions (LTCMA), released October 19, projects a 10% compound annual return for bitcoin over its 10-to-15-year horizon.
  • The bank assigns bitcoin 55% annualized volatility, compared with 17.2% for gold, which it expects to return 5.5%.
  • Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan argues the forecast overstates bitcoin’s volatility and understates its likely returns.

J.P. Morgan has, for the first time, placed a return estimate on bitcoin in its widely followed long-term outlook. The 2027 edition puts bitcoin’s projected compound annual return at 10%, ranking it at the top of the bank’s list of assets. The inclusion has drawn attention across the industry, though the bank stops short of recommending any allocation to the asset.

What Happened

The LTCMA is J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s annual outlook for returns over a 10-to-15-year period, covering more than 200 asset classes. The 2027 release is its 31st edition and was published on October 19. Its landing page highlights “a first look at bitcoin,” and states that the bank has now put a range on bitcoin’s potential returns.

Within the report’s table, bitcoin’s projected 10.0% compound return sits ahead of several traditional categories. U.S. REITs are projected at 8.2%, U.S. small-cap stocks at 7.7%, and U.S. large-cap stocks at 7.5%, up from 6.7% in the prior year’s outlook. U.S. high-yield bonds are expected to return 6.6%, gold 5.5%, and U.S. cash 3.2%. Private equity, at 9.8%, lands just below bitcoin, while a classic 60/40 stock-bond portfolio is projected at 7.0% a year.

Bitcoin’s reference price in the coverage is about $81,900. Applying a 10% annual compound rate to that figure would produce roughly $212,500 after 10 years and about $342,000 at the end of the 15-year window. These numbers are simple arithmetic by Bitcoin.com News, not a price target or forecast from J.P. Morgan.

Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise, responded on X shortly after the release with a sarcastic remark about bitcoin moving from being ignored, to being mocked, to being included in major institutional assumptions papers.

Why It Matters

For investors, the most significant point is the presence of bitcoin in a document that large institutions use as a reference for long-term planning. Many asset allocators rely on J.P. Morgan’s assumptions when building capital market projections, so a formal return range gives bitcoin a benchmark that sits alongside equities, bonds, real estate and commodities.

The report also shows how the bank views the asset’s risk profile. A 55% volatility figure is far higher than gold’s 17.2%, and the gap between bitcoin’s arithmetic and compound returns is substantial. In the table, bitcoin’s arithmetic return is 20.9%, while its compound return is 10.0%. The difference reflects volatility drag: when prices swing sharply, the compounded result for a holder falls well below a simple average of yearly gains.

For the crypto market, the outlook adds to a growing list of signals that traditional finance is engaging with digital assets. It does not, however, amount to an endorsement. Readers should treat the figures as modeled estimates built on assumptions, not as predictions.

Market Context

J.P. Morgan’s interest in digital assets has broadened in recent months. The bank is expanding its JPM Coin deposit token to Ethereum, which would bring blockchain-based dollar payments to the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency network. John Bilton, the bank’s global head of strategic research for multi-asset solutions, described the LTCMA as a guide for “markets reshaped by economic nationalism,” a framing that places bitcoin within a wider discussion about geopolitics and capital flows.

Investor flows into crypto products have been uneven. U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded $527 million in inflows in the most recent session covered by the report, led by BlackRock’s IBIT. The previous week, however, crypto ETFs had experienced outflows totaling $593 million. Short-term movements of this kind are common in the sector and do not necessarily signal a sustained trend.

Hougan’s critique focuses on the inputs rather than the ranking. He believes the volatility assumption is too high and the return assumption too low, suggesting the model portrays bitcoin as both riskier and less rewarding than he expects. He has also publicly argued that bitcoin could reach a $30 trillion market capitalization, a view that is considerably more optimistic than the LTCMA’s modeled figures.

The report itself also notes limitations. It states that “bitcoin is not included as an allocation,” meaning J.P. Morgan’s model portfolios do not hold it. In addition, bitcoin is not yet part of the bank’s main correlation data, so the firm cannot yet say how the asset interacts with other holdings in a diversified portfolio.

What to Watch Next

  • Allocation decisions: Whether J.P. Morgan moves from estimating bitcoin’s returns to including it in model portfolios, which would be a clearer sign of institutional adoption.
  • Correlation data: Any future inclusion of bitcoin in the bank’s correlation work, which would show how it behaves relative to equities, bonds and commodities.
  • ETF flows: Ongoing net inflows or outflows in U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs, which remain a key gauge of institutional demand.
  • Ethereum integration: Progress on the JPM Coin deposit token on Ethereum and how it is adopted by clients.
  • Competing forecasts: Responses from other asset managers and research houses, which may refine or challenge the volatility and return assumptions used in the LTCMA.
