Kalshi and BitGo Launch BTC and ETH-Backed Loans for Futures

  • Kalshi and BitGo have launched a lending arrangement that lets eligible institutional traders borrow against Bitcoin, Ethereum, and certain stablecoins to fund leveraged perpetual futures positions.
  • Borrowers keep ownership of their existing crypto holdings, and BitGo Bank & Trust sits between the parties to hold the collateral.
  • The move extends Kalshi’s crypto perpetuals business, which operates under oversight from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

Kalshi has teamed up with BitGo to offer loans backed by Bitcoin and Ethereum, giving eligible institutional clients a way to finance leveraged perpetual futures trades without selling the crypto they already hold. The arrangement is designed so that borrowers retain their underlying assets while using them as collateral on the exchange. The partnership marks another step in Kalshi’s push into crypto derivatives.

What Happened

Under the new structure, Kalshi Katalyst, the lending affiliate of Kalshi Prime, will extend the loans. BitGo Bank & Trust serves as the third party in the arrangement, responsible for holding the digital assets that secure each loan. The model lets a trader borrow funds to take a leveraged position in Kalshi’s perpetual futures contracts while the collateral remains in custody with BitGo.

Kalshi Prime CEO Jeff Bandman said that eligible collateral includes Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins that comply with the GENIUS Act. He also said the company intends to bring in additional custody partners as its lending network expands.

The service is built on BitGo’s existing institutional custody offering. A recent report reviewing BitGo’s digital asset infrastructure, including its institutional client base and custody operations, provides background on the platform that will support the arrangement.

Why It Matters

For institutional investors, the main appeal is the ability to gain futures exposure without liquidating spot holdings. Holders who prefer to keep their Bitcoin or Ethereum positions intact may find this structure useful for managing their portfolios. Bandman summarized the goal this way: “What we wanted to do was make it possible for customers to stay in crypto.”

Bandman identified several groups he sees as likely customers. These include large Bitcoin holders, Latin American businesses that use dollar-backed stablecoins, and crypto-native traders who currently use offshore perpetual futures platforms. Kalshi believes the offering will also attract traders who prefer platforms built on blockchain infrastructure.

For the broader market, the deal shows how leverage products are being connected to institutional custody and collateral frameworks. Pairing regulated derivatives trading with regulated custodians may appeal to firms that have been cautious about offshore venues. Lending against crypto collateral also introduces credit and collateral-management considerations, which are worth monitoring as these products scale.

Market Context

Kalshi’s crypto derivatives business has been expanding through the year. The company launched Bitcoin perpetual futures in June and has since broadened its offering into metals and other financial contracts. In September, Kalshi added perpetual futures tied to BNB, ADA, and AAVE.

Perpetual futures are contracts without an expiration date. Traders can keep a position open for as long as they meet the margin requirements, which distinguishes them from traditional futures that settle on a fixed date. Kalshi’s perpetuals unit operates within a trading system regulated by the CFTC.

Kalshi is also pursuing additional regulatory approvals. In September, Kalshi Klear asked the CFTC for permission to introduce margin trading on selected prediction-market contracts. The company has further applied for regulatory approval of perpetual contracts linked to oil and U.S. equity products. These filings indicate a strategy of widening the range of assets available under its regulated framework.

What to Watch Next

Readers should follow several developments. The first is whether Kalshi adds the custody partners Bandman mentioned, which would signal how quickly its lending network grows. The second is the status of the pending CFTC applications, including the margin trading request for prediction-market contracts and the proposed oil and U.S. equity perpetuals.

Uptake among the customer groups Bandman described will also be informative, particularly among large Bitcoin holders and businesses using stablecoins in Latin America. Finally, observers may watch how the arrangement is structured in practice, including how collateral is managed and how margin requirements are applied during periods of market volatility.
