Franklin Templeton Gets Nod to List Bitcoin DRIP ETFs on Nasdaq

  • Franklin Templeton has cleared Nasdaq listing for two Bitcoin ETFs that reinvest stock dividends into bitcoin exposure.
  • The funds, FBEQ and FIBT, hold 95% in U.S. equities and allocate up to 5% to bitcoin-related instruments, with a 0.09% management fee.
  • The launch comes as Franklin’s existing spot bitcoin ETF, EZBC, has drawn $335 million in total inflows, while bitcoin trades below $81,500.

Franklin Templeton, a global asset manager with $1.8 trillion in assets under management, has received Nasdaq approval to list two new exchange-traded funds that channel equity dividends into bitcoin. The products bring the firm closer to offering vehicles that automatically convert stock income into BTC exposure, a structure that differs from both conventional equity funds and standard spot bitcoin products.

What Happened

According to the latest SEC filing, the two funds are cleared to list and trade on Nasdaq. The Franklin US Equity Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF will trade under the ticker FBEQ, while the Franklin US Innovation Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF will use the ticker FIBT. The “DRIP” label refers to a dividend reinvestment approach, but in this case the reinvested cash is directed into bitcoin rather than additional shares of the same stocks.

Both funds track VettaFi indexes that blend traditional equity holdings with a rules-based bitcoin allocation. Each portfolio starts with 95% in U.S. stocks. The FBEQ index draws from a large-cap universe of 500 companies, while the FIBT index follows a list of 100 stocks focused on innovation and drawn from the Nasdaq. The remaining 5% sits in bitcoin-related instruments.

Rather than paying dividends out to holders or reinvesting them in more shares, the indexes send both regular and special dividends into bitcoin exposure on the trading day after each ex-dividend date. The bitcoin portion is capped at 20% of the portfolio. Any allocation that rises above 5% is trimmed back to 4.5%. Bitcoin exposure is delivered through bitcoin exchange-traded products and other instruments offered by Franklin Templeton. Both funds carry a management fee of 0.09%.

Why It Matters

For investors, the structure offers a rules-based route to a small, consistently rebalanced bitcoin position that is funded by equity income rather than new capital. The bitcoin share is intentionally limited, which means the funds are designed to carry far less price volatility than a pure bitcoin product. Investors who want passive exposure to crypto through a diversified equity wrapper may find this model more familiar than a direct allocation.

For the crypto market, the filing signals that a large traditional asset manager is building bitcoin into mainstream equity products rather than offering it only as a standalone holding. Each dividend cycle would generate a recurring stream of bitcoin purchases tied to the performance of the underlying stocks. The approach links bitcoin demand to corporate cash distributions, a connection that did not previously exist in ETF form.

Market Context

The launch arrives as Franklin Templeton expands its crypto-linked offerings. Its spot bitcoin ETF, EZBC, has recorded total inflows of $335 million to date, with $7.3 million flowing in on Wednesday. These figures indicate continued institutional interest in regulated bitcoin products, although they represent only one fund’s activity.

Franklin Templeton also recently met with the SEC’s Crypto Task Force. According to the source report, the firm asked for clarity on whether its tokenized funds and ETFs would need additional regulatory relief to take part in the trading environment created by the Innovation Exemption without breaching the Investment Company Act of 1940. The outcome of that discussion has not been reported, so its implications remain uncertain.

Market conditions were mixed at the time of reporting. Bitcoin had fallen below $81,500 amid several headwinds facing the broader crypto sector. Trading volume dropped 33% over the preceding 24 hours, a decline the report linked to options expiry.

What to Watch Next

Readers should monitor several developments. The first is the actual launch and trading debut of FBEQ and FIBT on Nasdaq, including opening asset levels and daily flows. The second is how the funds handle the first ex-dividend dates after launch, since the timing of bitcoin purchases will show how the mechanism operates in practice. Investors should also watch whether the bitcoin allocation stays within the 5% and 4.5% thresholds described in the index rules.

Regulatory developments are equally important. Any guidance from the SEC on the Innovation Exemption, tokenized funds, or the 1940 Act could affect how Franklin Templeton and other managers design future products. Finally, the performance of EZBC and the broader bitcoin ETF market will offer context on investor appetite for regulated crypto products.
