Why the Crypto Market Is Falling Today

Adam NovakBy Adam NovakOctober 23, 2026No Comments6 Mins Read

  • Total crypto market capitalization fell to $2.80 trillion, losing nearly $110 billion over 24 hours.
  • Bitcoin extended its 48-hour decline to more than 4%, trading near $81,500 on Friday, while Ethereum and XRP also faced selling pressure.
  • Rising Japanese inflation, a stronger yen, higher oil prices, a tech stock selloff and ETF outflows combined to weigh on risk assets.

The crypto market declined on Friday, with total capitalization slipping below the $2.8 trillion mark and sentiment shifting noticeably within a single day. Bitcoin, Ethereum and XRP all came under pressure as investors reacted to a mix of macroeconomic signals, geopolitical tensions and weaker demand from exchange-traded products.

What Happened

The total crypto market value dropped by nearly $110 billion over the previous 24 hours, erasing earlier gains and leaving the sector at $2.80 trillion. The CNN-style Fear & Greed Index, which tracks overall market sentiment, moved from Greed (68) to Neutral (50) in the same period. Bitcoin’s decline stretched to 48 hours, with the asset falling more than 4% before trading near $81,500 on Friday.

Ethereum and XRP also remained under pressure, with analysts pointing to risk-off sentiment and general macroeconomic unease as the primary drivers. Several separate developments contributed to the move, beginning with Japan’s inflation data. The country’s annual inflation rate rose to 2.1% in September 2026, up from 1.9% in each of the two previous months and the highest reading since December 2025. Core inflation climbed to 2.1% from 1.7% in August, moving above the Bank of Japan’s 2% target for the first time in nine months.

Those figures strengthened expectations for further monetary tightening. The Bank of Japan recently lifted its policy rate from 1% to 1.25%, and while a hold is widely expected in October, another increase in December is considered quite likely. The yen gained ground against the US dollar, moving toward 156 on Friday, its strongest level in five weeks. Meanwhile, the US dollar index (DXY) rose to 101.83, and Brent crude traded above $113 amid continued Middle East tensions.

Geopolitical developments added to the uncertainty. Reports indicate that the United States and Israel are preparing plans for renewed strikes after next month’s midterm elections, and some experts have suggested that Iran’s energy infrastructure could be a likely target. At the same time, both Washington and Tehran have signaled openness to easing tensions, with discussions focused on restoring shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Gold also weakened, briefly falling below $4,000 on Friday to its lowest level in nearly three months. Veteran trader Peter Brandt has said that weekly charts point to a possible rise in the gold/silver ratio to 121.7.

Why It Matters

For investors, the session illustrates how closely crypto prices are now tied to broader financial conditions. Bitcoin and other digital assets have often been treated as sensitive to interest rate expectations, currency moves and shifts in global risk appetite. When central banks tighten policy or when the dollar strengthens, speculative assets such as cryptocurrencies can face outflows as capital moves toward perceived safer holdings.

The US 10-year Treasury yield climbed to around 4.98% on Friday after dropping more than 10 basis points in the prior session. Higher yields make government bonds more attractive relative to non-yielding or volatile assets, and that dynamic appeared to influence positioning across markets. Deeper losses in technology and artificial intelligence shares, including Meta, Nvidia, AMD and SpaceX, pushed some investors toward bonds and away from riskier holdings. Renewed doubts about the returns on AI capital spending were cited as a key factor in that selloff.

For the crypto market specifically, the link to equities has become more apparent. Weakness in tech shares tends to spill over into digital assets, particularly when institutional participation is significant. Investors should be aware that correlated declines across asset classes can reduce the diversification benefits that some portfolios seek from crypto.

Market Context

Institutional flows have been a major factor in recent price action. Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded solid inflows earlier in the week, but that momentum faded during the tech rout, and the funds posted $635.6 million in net outflows on Thursday. BlackRock’s IBIT saw $254.1 million in outflows, while Fidelity’s FBTC recorded $217.5 million in redemptions. Analysts generally view these figures as evidence that institutional demand, while meaningful, has not been sufficient to offset broader macro pressure in the short term.

Other products showed mixed results. Spot Ethereum ETFs recorded total net outflows of $111 million, and spot Solana ETFs saw $2.65 million in outflows. XRP ETFs, by contrast, continued to attract inflows, with $3.55 million recorded on Thursday.

Derivatives markets added another layer of volatility. Approximately $1.31 billion in Bitcoin options and $250 million in Ethereum options were set to expire on Deribit, one of the largest crypto derivatives platforms. The Bitcoin put/call ratio stood at 1.03 with a max pain price of $82,000, while the Ethereum put/call ratio was 1.22 with max pain at $2,450. Max pain refers to the strike price at which the largest number of options would expire worthless, and large expiries of this kind can increase short-term price swings. Bitcoin futures open interest also fell below $54 billion amid liquidations across the market.

From a technical perspective, Bitcoin was trading around $81,550, slightly below its 50-day moving average of $81,835. Some market observers have said that a sustained move above $89,500 would be needed for a major rally. Analyst CredibleCrypto has predicted that Bitcoin could clear its swing high at $90,500 in the coming days, though technical forecasts remain uncertain and should be weighed against other evidence.

What to Watch Next

Several developments will likely shape the market in the near term. Investors should monitor the Bank of Japan’s October policy meeting and any signals about a possible December rate increase, as well as further Japanese inflation releases. Movements in the yen, the dollar index and Treasury yields will also indicate whether macro pressure is easing or intensifying.

Geopolitical headlines, particularly regarding the Middle East, Iran and energy prices, remain a key variable. Brent crude’s move above $113 has implications for inflation expectations, which in turn affect central bank decisions and risk sentiment.

Equity market performance in the technology and AI sectors will be closely observed, given the recent link between those shares and crypto prices. Daily spot ETF flow data for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and XRP products will offer insight into whether institutional demand is returning.

Finally, the monthly crypto options expiry next week, with max pain cited at $78,000, is an important date for derivatives traders. Readers should follow updates on open interest, liquidations and whether Bitcoin can hold key levels around $81,500 and $82,000 or recover toward the $89,500 area referenced by analysts.
