September Sees Perpetual Protocol Trading Volume Surpass $1 Trillion

In September 2023, Perpetual Protocol achieved a significant milestone by surpassing $1 trillion in monthly trading volume for the first time. This achievement was primarily driven by heightened competition among several emerging platforms, notably Aster, Hyperliquid, and Lighter. The monthly volume surged by 48%, increasing from $707.6 billion in August to a staggering $1.05 trillion, according to data from The Block’s dashboard.

Aster’s Ascension in Trading Volume

Emerging from relative obscurity, Aster, which focuses on the BNB Chain and is supported by YZi Labs, emerged as the leader in perpetual swap trading volume last month. It recorded an impressive $420 billion in trading activity, outperforming the formerly dominant Hyperliquid platform, which fell to second place with $282.5 billion—a 29% decline from its August performance of $398 billion. Additionally, Aster has plans to launch its Aster Chain, a ZK-based Layer 1, to bolster its perpetual trading capabilities, further solidifying its competitive stance in the sector.

Lighter’s Growing Influence

Another noteworthy contender in the perpetual trading landscape is Lighter, an Ethereum Layer 2 perpetual DEX that quietly garnered significant attention over recent months. In September, Lighter attracted $164.4 billion in trading activity, landing it in third place, even while operating in a private beta phase. With the recent launch of its public mainnet, Lighter is poised to challenge established players like Aster and Hyperliquid as it expands its reach to a broader audience. Currently, Lighter boasts 188,000 unique accounts and over 50,000 daily active users, signaling a robust engagement level amidst its user base.

Understanding Perpetual Swaps

A perpetual swap is a derivative contract that allows the buyer to gain synthetic exposure to an asset, while the seller takes the opposing short side. Unlike traditional futures contracts, perpetual swaps have no expiration dates, making them a versatile option for traders. This unique characteristic, alongside the lack of traditional limitations, has accelerated the adoption and trading activities within the decentralized finance (DeFi) space.

Aster’s Remarkable Growth Trajectory

Aster, previously known as APX Finance, rebranded after merging with Astherus in March. Its recent token launch on September 17 acted as a significant catalyst for its rapid rise in the perpetual trading arena. The platform received a notable endorsement from Binance co-founder Changpeng "CZ" Zhao, igniting interest among investors. Following the endorsement, ASTER’s valuation skyrocketed, climbing to $14 billion compared to its initial fully diluted valuation of $560 million. Within mere days, the token surged over 10x, illustrating the substantial impact of the high-profile endorsement on market perception and value.

Competitive Financial Landscape Among Platforms

In comparative terms, Hyperliquid, which launched its perpetual DEX platform earlier in 2023, currently has its HYPE token trading at around $49.63, reflecting a fully diluted market valuation of $49.5 billion. Meanwhile, Lighter has yet to introduce its own token into the market but is in a strong position thanks to its impressive trading volume and user engagement metrics. Notably, Aster has begun to outstrip Hyperliquid in daily fee revenue generated by perpetual trading, marking a pivotal shift in market dynamics. On September 28, Aster made over $25 million from protocol fees, starkly contrasting Hyperliquid’s $3.2 million revenue on the same day.

Key Differentiators in Aster’s Offerings

What sets Aster apart from its competitors is its innovative "hidden orders" feature, which allows traders to place "invisible" limit orders on the order book. This contrasts with the typical fully transparent order books seen in many perpetual DEXs, providing users with a significant strategic advantage in their trading operations. The combination of high leverage options, multi-chain capabilities, and the unique order placement feature positions Aster as an increasingly formidable player in the decentralized trading landscape.

In summary, the perpetual trading landscape is evolving rapidly, and Aster has demonstrated remarkable growth and market disruption in a short span of time. As the competition intensifies with platforms like Lighter rising to prominence and Hyperliquid adapting to changes, traders have more options than ever for engaging with perpetual protocols. The recent trends underscore the dynamism within the cryptocurrency market and the potential for continued innovation and growth in the DeFi space as new protocols and features emerge.
