Not L1s or Wallets: Who Accounts for the Majority of Crypto’s $20B Revenue?

The Evolving Landscape of On-Chain Fees in Cryptocurrency

The cryptocurrency sector is witnessing a remarkable shift in where revenue is generated within its ecosystem. According to the recent "2025 Onchain Revenue Report" published by 1kx, approximately $20 billion in on-chain fee revenue flowed through the ecosystem in 2025. Interestingly, the largest share of this revenue is not captured by traditional blockchains or wallets but predominantly by application-layer finance. Decentralized exchanges (DEXs), perpetuals, derivatives, and other decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms are establishing themselves as the primary revenue generators in the crypto landscape. This comprehensive report aggregates fee data from over 1,000 protocols and highlights the maturation of on-chain fees as a sustainable revenue source.

The Rise of DeFi and Finance Platforms

DeFi is becoming the dominant force in cryptocurrency revenue, accounting for around 63% of on-chain fees in 2025. This represents a significant shift from 2021, when layer-1 (L1) blockchains were responsible for the majority of fee income. In the first half of 2025 alone, DeFi and finance platforms witnessed a staggering 113% year-over-year growth, generating approximately $6.1 billion in fees, propelled by rapid expansion in DEXs, perpetuals, and derivatives. Innovative projects such as Hyperliquid and Meteora have contributed to this surge, while older players like Uniswap have seen their market share decline due to the emergence of faster and more cost-effective trading platforms.

Impact of Transaction Cost Reduction

A key factor contributing to this paradigm shift is the substantial decrease in average transaction costs. As scaling upgrades, layer-2 (L2) rollups, and various protocol enhancements were implemented, transaction fees plummeted, sometimes by as much as 80-90% compared to peaks in 2021. This reduction allowed secondary applications to scale profitably, thereby expanding their fee-generating activities by an impressive 126% year-over-year. The report highlights a curious dichotomy: while applications are increasingly capturing fee share, L1 blockchains still dominate in terms of overall market capitalization. This disconnect indicates a lingering preference among investors for L1s based on their long-term settlement values rather than their current fee-capturing capabilities.

The Competitive Landscape of Revenue Generation

Interestingly, the top 20 protocols account for approximately 70% of on-chain fee income, but this number is fluid, with a quarter of the top entrants changing each quarter. This dynamic creates opportunities for emerging projects to rapidly scale; currently, 71 protocols have surpassed the $100 million mark in annualized on-chain revenue—many achieving this milestone within only a year of launching. Despite this upward trajectory in on-chain fees, off-chain fees continue to dominate the market at $23.5 billion, with centralized exchanges (CEXs) claiming the largest share.

Emerging Profit Centers in Crypto

Several sectors within the cryptocurrency space are poised for future growth and revenue generation, as highlighted in the report. Tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs), decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePIN), wallets, and consumer-facing applications have demonstrated significant growth. Notably, tokenization of RWAs, while still in its nascent stage, has shown explosive growth with a year-over-year fee increase of 50 times, owing to increased involvement from major platforms such as Telegram and Kraken. On the other hand, DePIN is poised to thrive and may reach a valuation of approximately $3.5 trillion by 2028. Accordingly, wallets and trading interfaces are beginning to monetize through user swaps and enhanced user experiences, facilitating a new wave of revenue streams.

Conclusion: A Transformative Revenue Model

As we move deeper into 2025, the narrative surrounding cryptocurrency revenue is shifting from fleeting, speculative spikes in fees to a more stable, application-level monetization model. Application-layer finance is set to play a pivotal role in this transition, with an increasing number of projects making their mark in the market. By embracing more efficient transactional methodologies and innovative platforms, crypto can potentially unlock new revenue streams that align with evolving market demands.
