Solana Handles 40% of Layer 1 Throughput During Memecoin Surge – An Explanation

Solana: A Memecoin-Driven Resurgence Testing Scalability and Economic Viability

In the ever-evolving cryptocurrency landscape, Solana has emerged as a leading platform amidst surges of memecoin-driven activity. While this excitement may seem rooted in speculation, it serves a deeper purpose—a live stress test of the network’s scalability, fee dynamics, and throughput resilience. As of 2023, Solana’s transaction throughput (TPS) has shown remarkable consistency, fluctuating between 2,000 and 5,000 TPS, even witnessing peaks during memecoin launches. With current readings around 3,200 TPS, it’s evident that Solana is proving its production-grade scalability rather than merely episodic performance.

Over the past few years, Solana has consistently demonstrated its capacity to normalize transaction throughput quickly, regardless of speculative surges. This resilience highlights the network’s ability to withstand real demand without experiencing long-term degradation. After a dip to around 2,000 TPS in mid-2024, Solana rebounded and has continued to scale into 2025. Such consistency is vital, as it shows that Solana captures approximately 40% of Layer 1 transaction throughput, second only to the Internet Computer (ICP), which stands at about 4,100 TPS. This positions Solana favorably against competitors like TRON, BNB Chain, and Ethereum, which typically operate below 150 TPS.

One of the standout features contributing to Solana’s competitive edge is its unique architecture, which enables parallelized execution, low fees, and optimized networking. These factors transform periods of high activity into additive experiences rather than destabilizing disruptions. As Solana demonstrates low degradation under stress, it confirms its production readiness in real-world environments rather than in controlled laboratory settings. Such performance metrics are critical, especially when evaluating networks under various conditions.

The resurgence of memecoin activity on Solana has reached new heights, with daily token deployments surging above 40,000—an 11-month high. This resurgence aligns seamlessly with sustained transaction throughput ranging between 3,000 and 5,000 TPS, even during the most frenetic launch periods. Importantly, the ability to handle such high volumes of token creation without degrading network performance reinforces Solana’s appeal for rapid launches, frequent trading, and ongoing experimentation.

Moreover, the diversity of launchpads available on Solana has expanded, enhancing participation across the ecosystem. Lower friction thanks to high TPS translates to increased speculative activity and cements Solana’s dominance as the preferred execution layer for memecoin cycles. Beyond just volume, the speculative actions occurring on Solana are converting into tangible economic value. In the last 30 days, decentralized exchange (DEX) volume surpassed $110 billion, a figure more than double Ethereum’s $47 billion. This signals a sustained intensity in trading activity that validates the network’s capabilities.

The economic impact of this growing activity is reflected in application revenue generated by Solana, which rose to approximately $145 million in the same period. This revenue not only outpaces its rivals but also reaffirms the network’s ability to capture fees effectively. Furthermore, it’s noteworthy that this revenue surge occurred within a context of memecoin-driven cycles, validating the sustainability of Solana’s ecosystem amidst high-volume activities. As transaction volumes scale, base fees, priority fees, and miner extractable value (MEV) become compounded, reinforcing a robust monetization strategy.

In conclusion, the memecoin-driven speculation on Solana serves as both an economic catalyst and a rigorous live stress test. The network not only sustains elevated transaction throughput without degradation but also converts this increased activity into measurable economic value. This combination of resilience and profitability indicates that Solana has solidified its place as a leading platform, proving that its throughput advantages can yield durable economic success rather than transient market excitement. As the cryptocurrency ecosystem continues to evolve, Solana remains an essential player worth monitoring.
