Ripple’s ‘Ethereum-like’ Roadmap: Smart Contracts, Lending, and Legal Clarity

Ripple’s Strategic Upgrades: Is XRP Poised for Ethereum-Like Growth?

Ripple’s XRP has faced a challenging Q2, particularly in comparison to Ethereum (ETH), which has posted remarkable gains. While XRP saw a downturn of nearly 30% against ETH, having previously enjoyed a significant rally of over 100% in Q1, this shift is not merely coincidental. Ripple is implementing strategic upgrades that parallel Ethereum’s past successes, prompting the question of whether XRP could soon experience similar recognition from the market.

Ripple’s Commitment to Upgrades

Ripple is actively enhancing the capabilities of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), taking cues from Ethereum’s successful trajectory. This year, Ripple made headlines with its $1.25 billion acquisition of Hidden Road, a premier broker that offers essential trading services to large investors. By integrating these services, Ripple aims to empower institutions to engage more effectively with XRP. Additionally, the company plans to launch a new lending protocol in Q3 2025, alongside introducing more extensive programmability and smart contract functionalities akin to those available on Ethereum. This roadmap clearly emphasizes Ripple’s commitment to making XRPL more appealing and user-friendly for institutional investors, effectively timing its advancements with rising ETF speculation and newfound legal clarity following its legal battles with the SEC.

Positive Market Response

As Ripple’s updates gained traction, the market’s early reaction has been notably positive. XRP climbed above $2.15, marking a 5% increase, with Open Interest (OI) also surging by 3%—a sign that speculative liquidity is returning to the derivatives market. However, the sustainability of these gains hinges on securing substantial institutional backing. Although Ripple’s roadmap largely mirrors that of Ethereum’s post-upgrade strategies, achieving a equivalent recalibration in XRP’s value requires real capital flows from institutional investors.

Capital Dynamics and XRP/ETH Ratio

The XRP/ETH ratio serves as a critical indicator of capital rotation dynamics between the two cryptocurrencies. The ratio saw an explosive 550% increase from November 13 to mid-January, paralleling XRP’s impressive 217% rally from a low of $0.70 to a peak near $3.40. Notably, despite XRP experiencing a 35% drop from its peak, the ratio remained resilient, indicating that investors were favoring XRP throughout unfavorable market conditions. However, by late Q2, the ratio took a downturn, plummeting nearly 40% and hitting a low of 0.0008, primarily driven by Ethereum’s Pectra upgrade.

Impact of Ethereum’s Pectra Upgrade

Ethereum’s Pectra upgrade, launched in early May, played a pivotal role in revitalizing ETH, enabling it to cross the $2,000 threshold. This upgrade attracted substantial inflows, boosted stablecoin velocity, and ignited interest from major players like BlackRock. Ethereum’s annualized fees soared to over $7.3 billion, solidifying its dominance in the narrative surrounding blockchain technology. The upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade slated for late 2026 further reinforces ETH’s commanding presence in the marketplace. Ripple’s recent shift towards "Ethereum-style" upgrades appears increasingly strategic, designed to capture a similar wave of institutional enthusiasm.

Will the Market Respond?

The critical question now looms: will the market reward XRP with a favorable response similar to what Ethereum experienced? Ripple’s alignment with its Ethereum counterpart’s upgrade strategy could provide a significant inflection point for the cryptocurrency. However, without a robust influx of institutional investment, the XRP/ETH ratio may continue to decline, undermining Ripple’s efforts. Ripple’s trajectory will largely depend on how effectively it can translate its technological advancements into tangible institutional buy-in.

Conclusion: The Path Ahead for XRP

As Ripple moves forward with its ambitious roadmap for the XRP Ledger, its ability to gain traction in the competitive cryptocurrency landscape remains uncertain. Drawing from Ethereum’s successful blueprint, Ripple is positioning itself for potential market rewards. However, the necessity for institutional support cannot be understated. Investors will be keenly observing the developments within Ripple and how these upgrades resonate with the broader market. Whether XRP can replicate Ethereum’s explosive growth remains a question of not just technology but timing and market dynamics.
