Is Coinbase the ‘Amazon of Crypto’? Bernstein Sets Target Price at $510 for COIN

Coinbase (COIN) Revamped: Bernstein’s Bold New Price Target and Growth Insights

In a notable development for investors, Bernstein has dramatically revised its price target for Coinbase (COIN) by 64%, increasing it from $310 to an impressive $510. This revision stems from the firm’s confident projection regarding stablecoin growth and Coinbase’s stronghold in the institutional crypto sector. Analysts at Bernstein, led by Gautam Chhugani, argue that Coinbase is "the most misunderstood company" in the cryptocurrency sphere, positioning it similarly to the way Amazon revolutionized financial services.

Investors Take Note: Q2 Performance and Analysts’ Optimism

Coinbase (COIN) recently surged to a six-month high of $369.28 on June 25, achieving over 140% gains in the second quarter alone. This momentum follows Bernstein’s bullish assessment, which highlights the company’s resilience and potential for future growth. The firm’s analysts maintain that Coinbase’s market presence and operational strength have been considerably underestimated. With its listing on the S&P 500 and commanding the largest stablecoin business across exchanges, Coinbase contributes a significant 15% to its total revenue.

Institutional Crypto Dominance

Bernstein analysts emphasize that Coinbase has established an unparalleled moat in the institutional crypto landscape. The firm powers custody for 8 out of 11 Bitcoin ETF asset managers and has made strategic acquisitions, including the largest global crypto options exchange, Deribit. Additionally, Coinbase’s robust infrastructure, such as its custody operations, provides a defensive barrier against competition. As regulatory frameworks, such as a potential stablecoin bill, evolve, analysts anticipate that Coinbase will further benefit, reinforcing its dominance in the crypto market.

Innovation in Tokenization

Beyond its robust financials, Bernstein highlights Coinbase’s development of Base, an Ethereum layer 2 (L2) solution. This initiative positions Coinbase as a foundational platform for tokenizing assets for institutional clients. Notably, recent testing by JPMorgan using JPMD indicates a promising future for this segment. By innovating in areas like tokenization, Coinbase is poised to broaden its service offerings and attract more clients, a move the firm views favorably.

Bernstein’s Valuation Insights

The revised $510 price target is supported by analysts projecting a doubling of Coinbase’s earnings per share (EPS) over the next couple of years. Bernstein is bullish, estimating the company’s total revenue could reach $9.5 billion by the end of 2025 and balloon to $14.5 billion by 2026. The anticipated growth will be fueled not only by trading revenue but also through diverse revenue streams such as staking and stablecoins. Analysts have also raised their EPS projections, estimating $11.26 for 2025, $17.92 for 2026, and $20.38 for 2027, signaling confidence in the company’s journey ahead.

The Competitive Landscape

Despite the optimistic outlook, Bernstein downplays potential bearish narratives surrounding Coinbase, suggesting that competitive threats from platforms like Robinhood and traditional brokers are still months away. This positions Coinbase advantageously in a competitive landscape that has yet to fully materialize. At the time of the report, COIN was valued at around $357 in pre-market trading, indicating approximately 43% upside potential to reach Bernstein’s new target of $510—further evidence of the company’s economic viability and growth opportunities.

In summary, Coinbase’s recent performance and Bernstein’s revised expectations reveal a promising trajectory for the crypto trade giant. As analysts project significant revenue and EPS growth driven by institutional demand and innovative offerings, Coinbase’s position in the cryptocurrency market appears more secure than ever. For investors watching the crypto landscape, Coinbase presents not only a compelling investment opportunity but also a cornerstone in the evolving narrative of digital finance.
